Ice Cream on AIDS Walk

Ice Cream on AIDS Walk

Dear Schnorrer,

My girlfriend and I went for a nice walk in central park only to discover that the aids walk was going.  I thought it would be nice to enjoy the beautiful weather and walk in the walk.  My girlfriend grudgingly agreed to walk.  We had a nice time.  A member of the walk was giving out ice cream to keep people cool.  I went to reach for an ice cream sandwich, and she refused to allow it and further called me unethical.  Was what I did  so wrong?

Thanks, Michael

The Schnorrer

Michael,

There are rules of schnorring, and taking advantage of charity goes against them.  Therefore, we here have determined that your girlfriend was correct.  Are you allowed to take the Mormon granolla bars given out on the street, as those are meant for the public.  No need to convert to Mormonism.

I would have taken the ice cream. And I haven’t seen those Mormon granolla bars in a while……maybe with the nice weather they will be out.

    Schnorrer,

I would like to humbly suggest a fruitful alternative. I agree that when when charity requests a particular transaction, in this case, “walking” for AIDS, it is unethical to accept the gift if you do not plan on completing the transaction.

However, in this case, the subject DID walk for AIDS, more or less! I think that the ice cream would have been justified if, within the walker’s mind, he dedicated a few moments to the cause, possibly chanting something for a moment or clapping his hands and making a stern face, thus completing the requested transaction and clearing his guilty soul of the sourness of morality.

What we are talking about here is Aristotle’s moral dilemma regarding means in relation to ends, aka, Schnorring 302.
